San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has come to the defense of Sebastien De La Cruz, the 11-year-old boy who's wowed the crowds at Game Three and Four of the NBA Finals with his powerful version of the national anthem.
He's a mariachi singer who's appeared with his family on America's Got Talent. For his big moment singing the "The Star-Spangled Banner" he wore a mariachi-styled suit in the black-and-silver colors of his hometown San Antonio Spurs.
However, he's been attacked in comments on Twitter from accounts that have since been removed. They included the remark, "9 out of 10 chance that kid singing national anthem is illegal." Another said, "There's a little Mexican kid singing the National anthem…what has the world come too."
Popovich said of De La Cruz, "He's a class act. Way more mature than most his age. And as much as those comments by the idiots saddens you about your country, he makes you feel that the future could be very bright."
